If you're looking for unique and challenging live musical entertainment that spans the social and emotional gamut, look no further than TheatreWorks in Memphis.
The Black Repertory Theater/Playhouse on the Square production of "A Brief History of White Music" is not to be missed, particularly if you have a good sense of humor and want to get a better picture of the evolution of American pop music.
Performed in the 112-seat theater at 2085 Monroe near Overton Square, the show has a living-room atmosphere of intimacy and several chances for audience interaction as three vocalists take you on a tour of several decades of pop music. They put r&b interpretative touches on a dizzying collection of Elvis tunes, beach music, girl group glitzers and Beatle songs, to name just a few. At times hilarious and always thought provoking, it needs to be seen to be believed.
"The title is very provocative, of course," says director Tony Horne, "But you quickly see that the racial lines aren't really that distinct and that in reality, we ALL share this music that we have in common."
The singers include two remarkable high school students, Karlos Nichols and Krystal Williams, who perform with maturity far beyond their years. The third singer, Beverly Davis, is a joy to behold.
"A Brief History of White Music" runs through July 29, with performances Thursday through Saturday evenings and a Sunday matinee.
