MULTIPLE NOMINATIONS FOR R&B LEGEND IKE TURNER, TEXAS BOOGIE QUEEN MARCIA BALL, BLUES FEST CROWD PLEASER ROD PIAZZA AND THE MIGHTY FLYERS, PLUS NEWCOMERS KID RAMOS AND OTIS TAYLOR
MEMPHIS, TN - The Blues Foundation today announced the nominees for the 23rd Annual W.C. Handy Blues Awards to be presented on Thursday, May 23, 2002 at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, Tennessee. The star-studded ceremony features Blues performances, and will be followed by two-days of Blues music on Beale Street, 'the home of the Blues.'
"Entertainer of the Year" nominees include Soulman Bobby Rush, Blues festival favorite Rod Piazza, world renowned B.B. King, young siren Shemekia Copeland, boogie piano mama Marcia Ball and the Rock-and-Roll innovator Ike Turner. Ball leads the pack with five nominations followed closely by Ike Turner, Kid Ramos, and Otis Taylor each with four. Other notable nominees include Buddy Guy, Jimmie Vaughan, Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers and John Hammond.
"This year's Handy nominations celebrate dynamic new Blues artists alongside great new work by established names," stated Blues Foundation Executive Director Howard Stovall. "It's also exciting to see the Historical Album of the Year category reflect great reissues of recordings from Blues pioneers such as Charley Patton and Muddy Waters, who forged the foundations of Blues. Through the broadcast of the Handy Awards on public television across the nation, we look forward to demonstrating the excitement and influence of the Blues as America's indigenous art form to fans young and old around the country."
For over two decades the Handy Awards® have celebrated excellence in performance and recording of the Blues. A panel of international Blues industry experts votes on the initial nominees and thirty thousand Blues fans choose the winners.
Named in honor of W.C. Handy, "Father of the Blues", the awards ceremony traditionally opens the Handy Weekend. Celebrations include the Blues Symposium with workshops, a Children's Festival, the Handy Awards Festival with Blues bands performing in the clubs along Beale Street, and a Handy Artists Relief Trust Benefit Concert.
The 23rd Annual W.C. Handy Blues Awards are presented by Gibson Guitars. The Blues Foundation is a 501(C)3 corporation dedicated to preserving Blues history, celebrating Blues excellence and supporting Blues excellence. It is the umbrella organization for an international network of over 110 affiliated organizations with members in 28 countries.
