" Week of Blues is coming "
|
By Norm Shaw
Oh, but we do love this time of year. For blues fans in Memphis, the last week in April through the first weekend in May is nirvana. This year is no exception. The fun starts April 27 with the third annual Beale Street Blues Society Jug Band Tribute at B.B. King's Blues Club on Beale. The 18th annual W.C. Handy Awards are May 1 at the Orpheum Theatre, with Luther Allison once again heading the pack. Check out our new Blues Foundation update for more information on the awards show, and read all about Allison in our Q&A interview. The Beale Street Music Festival closes the greatest blues week in Memphis, and this year's line-up is strongest in the blues. You literally can park yourself in the Blues Tent and never leave. Nearly 60 acts are booked for the festival, which once again features a tent dedicated to local music and gospel. This issue also features a mix of local and national stories. On the local front, read about Levi Williams, who has made a career out of playing in Handy Park on Beale Street. Williams represents literally hundreds of others like him who have spent their lives playing the blues for the pure enjoyment of it. Now he's getting something in return. Robert Cray turned to Memphis when it came time to make his 10th album, Sweet Potato Pie. The choice was obvious, he says, because of his link to the Memphis Horns. Cray talks about the Horns, his new record and his career in an interview.
