The seventh annual Beale Street Blues Society's Talent Competition and Jam kicks off June 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Blues City Cafe on Beale Street.

Weekly winners of the contest, which runs every Tuesday through Aug. 5, will compete for a chance to win the international amateur contest and perform at next year's W.C. Handy Awards show.

Each week, the winner will receive $100. The entry fee is $10 per week, and bands can enter as many weeks as they wish until they win. Registration begins at 7 p.m. each week. A house band will be available for individuals.

A PA system, guitar, bass and drums will be provided, although drummers are asked to bring their own snare drum and bass pedal. Each entrant is allowed 12 minutes per act. Judging is based on blues content, talent and presentation. No member of a band may be currently signed to a recording, management or publishing contract.

The finals pitting all the weekly winners will be Aug. 17. Weekly winners are not allowed to add band members or vocalists for the finals. The Beale Street Blues Society overall winner will receive $300, a paid gig, a recording package at a local studio. Second place will receive $200, and third will get $100.

Society representatives say it is often best to compete earlier in the summer as more bands compete as the deadline approaches.

The competitions are open to the public, and door prizes will be awarded to non-contestants. For more information, call 527-4585.
