Luther Allison, who died in August following a short bout with cancer, nevertheless leads the pack in W.C. Handy Award nominations for the third straight year. The awards will be presented in Memphis on April 30 at the Orpheum Theatre.

Allison received six nominations, including Entertainer of the Year, Blues Band of the Year and Song and Record of the Year. There will be a tribute at the awards show to Allison and all the other blues greats who have passed away in the past year. Allison has swept the top awards the previous two years.

Also receiving multiple nominations were Bobby Rush, Rod Piazza, Joe Louis Walker and Corey Harris. Ruth Brown, who received three nominations, will again host the show. Performers will be named later.

The 19th annual Handy Awards are presented by the Blues Foundation, which is based in Memphis. Handy voters consist of Blues Foundation members, and subscribers to Blues Access, Blues Review and BluePrint magazines.
